What Is a Blockchain Forensic Investigation Report?
A blockchain forensic investigation report is a written record of a technical review. It identifies the transactions that were examined, the path the records support, the method and assumptions, and the points that remain uncertain. Individuals, lawyers, funds, and investigators use it to see the ledger evidence in one place. BNG SOFTWARE prepares that kind of report. Whether a court or an authority accepts it, and what weight they give it, depends on their rules and on the rest of the case.
What should counsel be able to check in the document?
- Transaction references and the source data behind them.
- A visual timeline of the relevant movements.
- The fund-flow analysis, including which links are verified, protocol-supported, probable, or unresolved.
- The methodology and the assumptions.
- Evidence provenance, including that artifacts can be tied back to hashed intake records.
- A separation between what was observed and what is a hypothesis.
Counsel should be able to disagree with a hypothesis without the observations collapsing. BNG SOFTWARE does not tell the lawyer what legal conclusion to draw.
How a fund uses the same document
After a hack or a loss, the report is the technical narrative management can share with its own counsel and, if it chooses, with auditors or investor representatives. It should be explicit about gaps, because an internal update that hides unresolved hops creates a second problem. The report does not, by itself, discharge a regulatory filing duty. The fund's own advisers decide what must be reported, and where.
What an individual receives, in plain terms
You should be able to read which transfer is yours, where it went next, and which later steps are solid and which are only possible. The report is allowed to say unknown. You can give the same document to a lawyer. If you only wanted to understand the path, you can stop when you have read it.
What an investigator or authority can take from it
A timeline, hashes, a method section, and a list of limits they can evaluate beside the rest of their file. The report is support. It is not a warrant, a charge, or an expert opinion filed in their name unless a separate instruction says so.
What the report is not
- A guarantee of recovery.
- A statement that a named person committed a crime.
- A court judgment or a freeze order.
- A complete history of off-chain events.
How provenance is handled
BNG Citadel hashes evidence artifacts with SHA-256 at intake to establish file-integrity references. These hashes help identify subsequent changes to preserved files. They do not by themselves prove that the original file was authentic, and they do not prove that every figure in a report is correct. Evidence provenance, processing history and report references are maintained separately. BNG Folio keeps the finished findings tied to those references. The company does not describe this as a certification or as a court-approved format, because no honest label of that kind exists without the forum's own decision.
A note on using it in proceedings
A structured report may assist legal proceedings. Admissibility and evidential weight depend on the jurisdiction, the quality of the evidence, the methodology used, and the applicable procedural rules. BNG SOFTWARE does not warrant that any report will be admitted or given any particular weight.

Frequently asked questions
Can I see a sample report before I engage?
The contents listed on this page are the standard categories. A sample, if one is ever shared, would be redacted and provided under the engagement terms, not as a marketing exhibit full of someone else's data.
Will the report name the suspect?
It names addresses and, where supported, known services. A legal name is not a standard output, because an address does not record the identity of the person who controls it.
Can my lawyer rely on it?
Your lawyer can review it and decide how to use it. Reliance in the legal sense is their professional judgment.
Is the report the same as the feasibility note?
No. A feasibility look is an early view of whether more work is rational. The investigation report is the fuller document, scoped separately if that is how the engagement is written.
Who owns the method?
Unless the agreement says otherwise, the company keeps its tools and report format, and the client receives a licence to use the delivered report for the purpose in the agreement. The signed agreement governs.
