Can a Cryptocurrency Exchange Freeze Stolen Funds?
A cryptocurrency exchange can sometimes restrict an account under its own rules, or when it receives a request it is willing or required to follow. That decision belongs to the exchange or to an authority. BNG SOFTWARE cannot order a freeze. A report that shows a path toward an exchange can support a request. It cannot make the exchange grant one. If a restriction happens, it is still not the same thing as assets returned to the client.
Three different events
- A tracing observation: funds moved toward an address associated with an exchange.
- A restriction: the exchange or an authority limits an account or a balance.
- A return: assets or value come back to the client.
People are often sold the third event when only the first exists. The company's terms say it plainly: an acknowledgement, freeze, or hold by an exchange or authority does not by itself constitute recovered funds unless the signed agreement expressly says so.
I was told the exchange already froze my funds. What should I check?
Ask for the restriction in a form you can verify with the exchange itself, not only in a screenshot from a recovery seller. A freeze claimed by a stranger, followed by a request to pay a release, insurance, or tax fee in cryptocurrency, is a known secondary scam. BNG SOFTWARE will not ask you to pay crypto to unlock a balance. The behaviour patterns are listed in How to Avoid Fake Cryptocurrency Recovery Companies. If you want the path documented first, start with the records of the original transfers.

Who is able to act
The exchange, under its rules and the law that applies to it. A lawyer, through the procedures of the place where they are admitted. A competent authority, through its own powers. Not a blockchain analytics company acting alone. Anyone who describes a tracing firm as able to lock an account is describing a power that firm does not have.
How does a technical report fit a lawyer's request to an exchange?
Counsel may decide to write to a service, seek a court measure, or involve an authority. Those are legal choices. The technical report supplies the transaction references, the basis for describing an address as custodial, and the limits of that description. BNG SOFTWARE can prepare the report so counsel can evaluate it. The company does not choose the legal route and does not sign the lawyer's letter as if it were counsel.
A fund's assets may have reached a custodian. What can be prepared without overstating it?
Prepare the deposit references and the evidence grade, and separate them from any hope that the custodian will restrict an account. Internal updates to a board or to investors should use the same distinction. A premature statement that the exchange has frozen the funds is a factual claim about a third party and should be made only when that third party, or counsel, has confirmed it.
Can an authority use this work?
Yes, as technical support. The authority makes the request through its own powers. BNG SOFTWARE can document addresses, times, and method. It does not seize accounts and it does not direct the authority.
What a client can hand to those people
The written report produced through BNG Folio keeps findings tied to transaction references, methodology, and provenance records, so a lawyer, an exchange, or an authority can check each step independently. Its contents are described in What Is a Blockchain Forensic Investigation Report?
Frequently asked questions
Can BNG SOFTWARE freeze the funds?
No. The company is not an exchange and not a court. It documents transaction paths and prepares technical reports.
If the funds are frozen, do I get them back?
Not automatically. A restriction can preserve a situation while someone else decides what the rules allow. It can also end without a return to the original holder.
How fast do exchanges freeze stolen funds?
There is no general answer. Some reports are never acted on. BNG SOFTWARE does not publish a response time for venues it does not control.
Should I create an account at the exchange to ask for my funds?
Take advice from a lawyer before you contact a venue, especially if a recovery agent is coaching the message. BNG SOFTWARE does not provide legal advice or legal representation. Where appropriate, the company may help clients identify independent legal professionals or law firms for separate engagement. Any legal services are provided independently under a separate agreement between the client and the legal professional. Do not open accounts or send payments because a stranger says a balance is waiting.
Does a freeze start the success fee?
Only if the signed agreement defines that event as the recovery condition. A freeze or hold is not itself a recovery unless the agreement says so.
