Can Stolen Crypto Be Traced to an Exchange?
Stolen cryptocurrency can sometimes be traced to an address associated with a cryptocurrency exchange or another custodian. That finding means the public trail points at a service that may hold its own customer records. It does not mean the exchange has frozen an account, named a customer, or agreed to return funds. BNG SOFTWARE can document the path and the strength of the association. The exchange decides what it will do with any later request.
What changes if the path reaches a custodial service?
For a private individual, this is often the first moment a case feels concrete. The right reading is narrower. A custodial deposit can be a place where a request is possible. It can also be a dead end if the label is weak, if the deposit was onward-transferred inside the service, or if the service declines to act. A feasibility review should say which of those is visible from the outside before larger hopes are built on it.
For a fund, the same observation matters because a treasury loss may have been broken up and sent to several venues. The report should list each candidate service separately, with its own evidence grade, so the fund's counsel does not treat a weak label as a strong one.
Do not send a seed phrase, a private key, or a password.

How an address becomes an exchange address in a report
Some addresses are widely attributed to a custodian. Some are inferred from behaviour and are only candidates. Where a pattern is consistent with a custodial service but still needs more evidence, the destination is marked unresolved. A logo on a diagram is not proof, and a careful report does not let presentation do the work of evidence.
What the public ledger stops showing after a deposit
Once value is credited inside a custodial service, later movements between customers may never appear as separate public transfers. A trace can stop at the deposit even though the economic story continued. The finding should say that the public trail stops there, rather than imply visibility the company does not have.
What should a lawyer receive if they may contact the exchange?
A lawyer needs the transaction references, the addresses, the times, the asset, and a plain statement of why an address is described as exchange-related. They also need the sentences that limit the claim. BNG SOFTWARE can prepare that technical pack. The lawyer decides whether, where, and how to send it. Legal strategy is not part of the pack. For readers who only want to know
If you only want to know whether the funds touched a known service, the tracing result can end with that statement. You do not have to ask the exchange for anything, and nothing in the report obliges you to take the next step.
For authorities
An authority may already have a route to ask a service for records. The technical file shows which addresses and times are relevant to that request. BNG SOFTWARE does not replace the authority's process and does not hold its powers.
What this page does not decide
Whether a restriction is possible is a separate question, covered in Can a Cryptocurrency Exchange Freeze Stolen Funds? Whether an address can be tied to a named person is covered in Can You Identify the Owner of a Crypto Wallet?
Frequently asked questions
If I see a deposit to a well-known exchange, are my funds still there?
You cannot tell that from the deposit alone. The service may have moved, restricted, or ignored the balance. A tracing report does not see inside the exchange's books.
Can BNG SOFTWARE contact the exchange for me?
The company can prepare the technical material a client or a lawyer may use. It does not control the exchange, and a contact from a technology firm is not a court order. Who sends any request should be agreed in the engagement, especially where a lawyer is instructed.
Will the exchange give me the account holder's name?
Only if it chooses to, or if it is required to by a process that applies to it. Many services will not disclose a customer to a private complainant.
Does this work for USDT on TRON and for Bitcoin?
Both can be the subject of a deposit trace. The network and the way custodial addresses are recognised differ. The limit is the same: the deposit is a destination finding, not a balance held for the victim.
What if the exchange label might be wrong?
Then the report should say the association is a candidate or unresolved. Acting as if it were certain would overstate the evidence.
