Can Cryptocurrency Be Traced Through Mixers?
Cryptocurrency can sometimes be traced up to a mixer, and sometimes a later transfer remains a candidate. Mixing services are built to make the connection between what went in and what came out harder to see. A careful review documents the deposit, the service, and any later movement that is only a hypothesis. Many of those links stay unresolved. BNG SOFTWARE labels that uncertainty in the findings. It does not claim that every mixed trail can be rebuilt.
If a mixer appears on the path, is further work still rational?
It depends on what is still visible around the mixer. A review can be worth doing when the records show a clear deposit, a recognisable service, and later withdrawals that can be compared and then either supported or rejected. It is also rational to stop when the only honest result would be a stack of unresolved candidates. The assessment should say which of those two positions the records are in before a larger investigation is proposed.

What mixing changes for a reader of the ledger
A mixing service takes deposits from many sources, and users later withdraw to new addresses, in order to weaken a simple one-to-one reading of the chain. Some designs add delays or split amounts. That is the level of detail this page keeps to. How any given service is constructed, and how anyone might use one, are not instructions this site provides.
What a review can still record
- That a transfer reached an address associated with a mixing service, where that association is supported.
- The time and the amount of the deposit that is actually on the ledger.
- Later withdrawals that an analyst compares and then marks as verified, probable, or unresolved.
- Other hops before or after the mixer that never entered it.
Candidate links may be ranked by BNG Sentinel so a person examines the most relevant evidence first. A model score is not a finding until an analyst accepts it, and case data is not sent to third-party AI services for that ranking.
Two lines that are both too neat
The first line is that a mixer makes a case impossible. It makes attribution harder, and it does not by itself tell you that every lead is dead. The second line is a vendor who claims a complete reconstruction without showing evidence grades. That is a slogan, not a method. Ask for a written distinction between observed transfers and hypotheses. Do not pay a fee to unlock mixed coins, and do not send a seed phrase. The wider warning signs are in How to Avoid Fake Cryptocurrency Recovery Companies.
For funds: the break in the trail belongs in the timeline
A fund whose stolen assets touched a mixer still needs an incident timeline of the hops that are verified, plus a plain statement of where the trail breaks. That statement is often what counsel and insurers ask for. A reconstructed output set that cannot be evidenced should not be offered, and BNG SOFTWARE does not offer one.
What often remains unresolved
A later withdrawal can look related because of timing or amount and still be someone else's coins. Privacy features on some networks reduce what is public in the first place. Off-chain arrangements are invisible. When that is the state of the file, the finding is that the link is unresolved.
How this should appear in a report
The report repeats the grades. It does not convert an unresolved mixer output into a named suspect. The document standard is described in What Is a Blockchain Forensic Investigation Report? and the attribution limit in Can You Identify the Owner of a Crypto Wallet?
Frequently asked questions
Does a mixer make stolen crypto impossible to follow?
It makes the onward link harder and sometimes leaves it unresolved. The deposit into the service can still be a documented fact. Treat any promise of perfect reconstruction as a claim that needs written evidence grades.
Can you trace a specific mixing service by name?
A named service is handled inside a case, from the records of that path. The public explanation stays general: some links can be documented, and many stay unresolved.
Will mixed funds still be accepted by an exchange?
That is the exchange's policy and a legal question for the people involved. This page does not advise anyone to move mixed funds.
Does Zcash or another privacy feature work like a mixer?
Privacy features can also limit what a public review can see. They are not all the same design. The practical point is the same: the report must say what is visible and what is not.
Should I use a mixer to protect myself after a scam?
This page is about understanding a trail after a loss. It is not a guide to moving funds. If you are unsure what to do with assets you still control, speak to your own adviser. Do not send a seed phrase to a tracing firm.
