How Long Does Cryptocurrency Recovery Take?
There is no single length of time for cryptocurrency recovery. BNG SOFTWARE agrees the scope of a technical review before that work goes ahead, and the time depends on the number of transfers, networks, and uncertain links. An exchange, a court, or another authority then follows its own process, which the company does not control. In a qualifying engagement, the fee window can run for five years from the date both sides accept the investigation. That window is not a promise that assets will return inside it.
Why a public average would be misleading
Firms that advertise a fixed recovery time are describing a hope, or a sales line. Paths differ. Some end after a few clear transfers. Some cross bridges and then stop at an unresolved link. Publishing one number would hide that difference, and any page that quotes a number without reading your records is quoting a marketing figure.
How long does it take to learn whether further work makes sense?
A first look is limited to the records you can provide and to the question of whether a path is readable. BNG SOFTWARE confirms that scope before any chargeable work begins. The company does not publish a fixed number of days, because a single hash and a year of cross-chain activity are different jobs. You should receive a clear description of what the first review will cover, and what it will leave out.
Do not send a seed phrase, a private key, or a password.

The separate clocks in a recovery matter
It helps to treat one matter as several clocks that rarely finish together.
- The technical review, scoped with BNG SOFTWARE and confirmed before work begins.
- Any later request to an exchange, a lawyer, or an authority. Their queue is theirs.
- Monitoring after a report, if the agreement includes it, for up to five years from delivery.
Expecting all three to complete in the same week is a common misunderstanding. It is not a reason to accept a promise from someone who claims otherwise.
What can slow a technical review
- Missing hashes or an unknown network.
- Many hops, splits, or swaps.
- Cross-chain links that are only candidates.
- A mixer or a privacy feature on the path.
- Waiting for account records that only the client can obtain from a platform.
None of these is a complaint about clients. They are dependencies, and an honest scope names them.
What the five-year period is
For a qualifying recovery investigation, the fee window runs for five years from the date both sides accept the investigation, as written in the agreement. The window means a recovery from an entity the work covered can make the agreed fee payable. It does not mean the company expects recovery to take five years, and it does not mean funds will return. How the fee interacts with that period is set out in How Much Does a Cryptocurrency Investigation Cost?
A trace whose only aim is to explain the path
If you only want to understand what happened, the timing question is simpler. There is no exchange request and no court step in the way. The duration is the duration of the agreed review of your records.
For funds waiting on outside parties
An incident timeline for a fund is often needed for internal reporting while custodians or other parties have not yet responded. The technical timeline can be delivered on the agreed scope even when a custodian stays silent, because it describes the public record rather than the custodian's books.
What you can do at the start to avoid lost time
Preserve the hash, the network, the addresses, and the date. Keep the messages that led to the payment. Do not send a seed phrase to anyone who offers to speed the case up, and be suspicious of urgency itself. The behaviour patterns are listed in How to Avoid Fake Cryptocurrency Recovery Companies. The order of the work itself is in How Does Cryptocurrency Recovery Work?
Frequently asked questions
Can you finish a trace in a few days?
Sometimes a narrow set of transactions can be reviewed quickly. A long or ambiguous path takes longer. The scope is agreed first, rather than a universal turnaround being promised.
Does the five-year period mean the case stays open that whole time?
It means a qualifying agreement can keep a fee window for five years from the date both sides accept the investigation. The window does not start when the form is sent. It is not a prediction of when, or whether, assets come back.
How long does an exchange take to freeze funds?
BNG SOFTWARE cannot answer that. The exchange sets its own process, and a freeze may not happen at all.
Will hiring a lawyer make the trace faster?
A lawyer changes the legal options. The lawyer does not shorten the time it takes to read the ledger. Some legal steps have their own deadlines, and those are questions for counsel.
Should I wait to collect more evidence before contacting you?
Keep what you already have, especially hashes and addresses. You do not need a complete file to ask for an assessment. Do not delay in order to assemble a seed phrase. Never send one.
